Francesca Petherbridge

"The Mick Young Scholarship proved to be so much more than a financial grant that sustained my enrolment. As critical as this has been to my study journey, more importantly, being awarded the scholarship validated that others believed in my abilities, recognised my passion and wanted to support my success.

It was the support of the Mick Young Scholarship selection panel members that reassured me I was on the right career path. Their confidence in me, translated as investment of scholarship funds towards my future, made me more determined to explore how far I could take a floristry career.

Stepping into the great unknown on a new career path began with entry in the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers competition where I was thrilled to take second place. With confidence blossoming, I was commissioned to design shop window displays for Jurlique’s Wintergarden and Carindale boutiques in Brisbane, supply wedding and birthday functions, and volunteered my services to a charity foundation providing flowers to the less fortunate - all before I had completed my qualification.

Since graduating with a Certificate III in Floristry through the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE, my career has literally flourished. I am living my dream as a floral designer and owner/operator of my own business in inner city Brisbane. Aptly named Francesca's Flowers, my shop is a unique florist and tea room space that nourishes creativity and nurtures my connections with the local community.

My work allows me to share in people’s journeys through life’s joys and sadness, behind the scenes. It’s a privileged place and one I couldn’t be enjoying without the support of the Mick Young Scholarship throughout my course. I feel a real sense of satisfaction paying forward the support I had from virtual strangers behind the scenes of the Scholarships in the work I do, knowing that my study and career choice now brings sunshine into another persons' life.”
